We noticed no real difference between the Camaro Convertible’s ride and steering feel or any extra rattles versus the coupe, but we’ll have to spend more time with the car before we can make a verdict.
Current Chevrolet Camaro The Chevrolet Camaro is available as a two-door coupe or convertible and in five trim levels: base LS, midgrade LT, high-performance SS and hyper-performance ZL1 and Z/28. The LS comes standard with niceties like alloy wheels and air-conditioning, to which the LT adds power seats and a touchscreen with smartphone integration. The V8-powered SS includes a limited-slip differential and a sport-tuned suspension. The ZL1 boasts a variety of performance parts like Brembo brakes and adaptive suspension dampers, plus standard leather upholstery and Boston Acoustics audio. The hard-core, coupe-only Z/28, on the other hand, has a race-ready suspension and modifications for reduced weight.
2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Chevrolet is bringing back its high-powered Camaro ZL1 trim level to the newest sixth-generation version. The ZL1 got 60 more hp, 80 more pounds-feet of torque as well as a new ten-speed automatic transmission.
Chevrolet said the exterior bundle of the ZL1 was honed with over 100 hours of wind tunnel testing to come up with the super- aerodynamic airflow and Camaro s cooling. The ZL1 rides on unique forged aluminum 20-inch wheels. The ZL1 sports 305 back Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires and 285 front plus Brembo brakes for improved track handling.

The most recent 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 also weighs 200 pounds less than its forerunner, based on Chevrolet. The ZL1 comes with standard a six-speed manual with lively rev-fitting ability, as you d anticipate. Nevertheless, the big surprise is the Camaro ZL1 will probably be the very first GM product to supply the new 10-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox is going to be by the end of 2018 in eight vehicles. Enthusiasts, rest assured: the ZL1 will even give you a conventional six-speed manual transmission with rev fitting.
Brutal acceleration comes from the rear wheels, after being fed the LT4's 640 hp by either a six-speed stick or Chevy's first 10-speed automatic. The upcoming 10-speed features extremely close ratios, which should help squeeze out the best fuel economy possible given the performance. If you're hoping the new transmission will show up in your next
You'll be able to see the ZL1 for yourself at the upcoming New York auto show; for now, come along for the ride: Chevy slapped a Go-Pro to the A-pillar of our ZL1 to record our heads bobbling around. Check out the video below and enjoy that sweet blower whine.
The top-of-the-line Magnetic Ride suspension is responsible for the cornering, and also keeps the Camaro from diving during the heavy braking required with this much power. Knowing this ZL1 needs all the help possible, Chevy specs six-piston front calipers and massive 15.35-inch front rotors, plus sticky Eagle F1 tires as standard equipment.

More specifically, the ZL1 borrows the Corvette Z06’s 6.2-liter supercharged V8 to the tune of 640 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. Not only is that engine all-new for the Camaro, should you decide to forgo the standard six-speed manual gearbox, Chevrolet will offer a new 10-speed automatic. The new Camaro’s lighter, stiffer platform is complemented by Magnetic Ride suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential. Also standard is a Driver Mode Selector, dual-stage exhaust, launch control, and Performance Traction Management.
Much like the Z/28, the Camaro ZL1 is an important nameplate for Chevrolet and traditionally the most powerful model in the Camaro lineup. The next-gen car was expected to take things up a notch in every department and I m happy to report that it doesn t disappoint. Although the ZL1 is no longer the naturally aspirated muscle car designed specifically for drag racing, its new purpose in the Camaro lineup is equally significant. Without it, the Camaro lineup would be incomplete. More over, GM would no longer have a competitor for the insane Challenger Hellcat and an upcoming
Updated 03/16/2016: With just a few days before its official debut at the 2016 New York Auto Show, Chevrolet dropped the first info on the new generation Camaro ZL1.
“The Camaro ZL1 is designed to excel at everything,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development. “It’s a 2+2 coupe offering incredible performance – acceleration, handling and braking – with the highest levels of technology and perfect chassis damping, making it suitable for everyday driving. It will compare well to any sports coupe, at any price and in any setting.”
The 2017 Camaro ZL1 is poised to challenge the most advanced sports coupes in the world in any measure – with unprecedented levels of technology, refinement, track capability and straight-line acceleration.
Updated 09/15/2015: The upcoming Camaro Zl1 was caught testing once again, this time wearing less camouflage than in the past. It is now easier to spot design elements like the sportier front bumper with a prominent lip spoiler, a larger rear spoiler and wider exhaust tips.

, The Camaro s new design makes the ZL1 even more aggressive, Enhanced track capabilities due to lighter platform and redesigned internals, Significantly more power and torque,
Another new feature is the 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Specifically tuned for the ZL1, the 10-cog unit has a 7.39 overall ratio for smaller steps between gears and enables the engine to remain at optimal rpm levels during acceleration and when exiting corners. Chevy claims it will deliver quicker laps and "lightning-quick responses" on both up- and downshifts. Chevy even says its in-house testing has shown the 10-speed to be faster shifting than the Porsche PDK dual-clutch. The 1-2 upshift is said to be 36 percent quicker, while the 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts are 27 and 26 percent quicker, respectively.
The incredibly powerful drivetrain is paired with a redesigned chassis that is tuned for maximum performance on the street and the race track. Features include an updated Magnetic Ride suspension, Performance Traction Management, electronic limited-slip differential, Custom Launch Control and Drive Mode Selector. The coupe rides on 20-inch, forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires with a compound and construction developed exclusively for the Camaro ZL1. Stopping power comes from Brembo brakes with 15.35-inch, two-piece rotors and six-piston calipers at the front. Details for the rear axle aren t yet available, but look for smaller, 14-inch rotors and four-piston calipers.

Tear up some asphalt with a lil  old fashioned American muscle. The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 boasts an aggressive 6.2 liter V8 that pumps 640 horsepower through either a 10 speed automatic or 6 speed manual transmission.
The Camaro ZL1 is about much more than just a powertrain. It sits on a Magnetic Ride Control adaptive damping suspension, connected to the pavement via 285/30ZR20 front and 305/30ZR20 rear Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires that are specially developed for this car. Two-piece front brake rotors measuring 15.35 inches in diameter provide stopping power, clamped by 6-piston Brembo front brakes. Technology Expect the new Camaro ZL1 to have the latest version of Chevrolet MyLink, an infotainment system with an 8-in. display screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone-projection technology, and OnStar services including a 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection. Confirmed as an option, a Performance Data Recorder can capture video, audio, and data from a track event, place it on an SD card, which in turn allows the Camaro ZL1’s owner to download the information and then to upload it to social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, or Periscope. Additional Research:
Introduction High-performance Camaros are nothing new. What you see here, embodied within the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, might just represent the pinnacle of the breed, one that weighs 200 lbs. less than the car it replaces while adding 60 more horsepower and 84 more lb.-ft. of torque. Introduced in advance of its unveiling at the
The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupe and convertible models. T he 2017 Camaro ZL1 is poised to challenge the most advanced sports coupes in the world in any measure - with unprecedented levels of technology, refinement, track capability and straight-line acceleration.
Chevrolet is keeping the Camaro's performance train rolling with a new 640-horsepower, supercharged 2017 Camaro ZL1, announced just a month after the automaker unveiled the
Chevrolet said the ZL1's exterior package was honed with more than 100 hours of wind tunnel testing to develop the super-Camaro's cooling and aerodynamic airflow. A larger lower grille opening increases airflow over the standard SS, while the upper grille wears a hollowed-out Chevrolet badge for additional airflow to the cooling systems. On the previous track-focused 2015 Camaro Z/28, Chevrolet found that the hollow badge lowered engine coolant and oil temperatures by 2 degrees Fahrenheit during extended track use.
While Chevrolet says there's no need to purchase an optional package to make the ZL1 track-ready because all the aforementioned track goods are standard — likely a dig at the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 — pricing hasn't been announced. Plus, rumors suggest that the GT350's optional track-focused equipment may become standard for 2017. Either way, the two track-ready pony cars look like prime candidates to face off when the ZL1 goes on sale in late 2016.
Chevrolet added its Magnetic Ride dampers to the SS as an option for 2016, and as with the SS 1LE the adjustable-damping suspension is standard on the ZL1, though updated specifically for the ZL1. An electronically controlled mechanical limited-slip differential also is shared with the SS 1LE as well as the Chevrolet Corvette Z51, Grand Sport and Z06. Chevrolet's Performance Traction Management system adds even more settings for performance driving beyond a regular track mode. In other applications, PTM modes include specific tuning of the differential, Magnetic Ride control, stability and traction control, and more.
The meat of the ZL1 includes the more-powerful supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 making 640 hp and 640 pounds-feet of torque. Named "LT4," the engine also is in the Corvette Z06; here, it makes 10 fewer horsepower and pounds-feet of torque. All 640 hp channel through a standard six-speed manual transmission or an available ten-speed automatic transmission that Chevrolet says enables the LT4 to remain at optimal rpm during acceleration and especially while exiting corners. The new ten-speed will be in eight vehicles by the end of 2018, GM says.
on the Camaro LT and SS trim levels. Based on the redesigned 2016 Camaro, which rides on a smaller, lighter and stiffer chassis, the ZL1 returns to the lineup weighing 200 pounds less than its model-years 2012 to 2015 predecessor. It's also got 60 more horsepower, 80 more pounds-feet of torque and a new available ten-speed automatic transmission.
So, to me, that's what's coolest about the ZL1. Not only do you get the sharp lines, shout-y exhaust and performance you've come to expect from a Camaro but also state-of-the-industry tech.
Then there's the new optional 10-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the 6-speed automatic offered in the 2015 Camaro ZL1. Although more gears is neat, the real benefit of it is to efficiency. With a 10er bolted the that V8, you'll theoretically be able to achieve moderately good fuel economy figures when you're not driving the ZL1 like you stole it.
Yes, yes I do. That's because the all-new Camaro ZL1 is giving me all sorts of feelings. Let me explain why.
The 2017 Camaro ZL1 changes all of that. Not only does it have 640 horsepower from supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine (borrowed from the Corvette Z06), it has a new 10-speed automatic transmission, onboard 4G LTE Wi-Fi and — you guessed it — Apple CarPlay. Need I say more?
If you re concerned about body rigidity without the Camaro ZL1 s roof, Chevy thought of that. Instead of just being about straight-line acceleration, both versions of the ZL1 can get around turns pretty well. Engineers had planned ahead from day one of designing the current Camaro s architecture, making it so the convertible needs just a few structural changes to handle the kind of brutality dished out by the LT4.
Like the coupe, the Camaro ZL1 Convertible packs a serious punch thanks to the supercharged LT4 6.2-liter V-8 Small Block crammed under the hood. If you don t already know, it pushes out 640 horsepower and 640 lb.-ft. of torque, which is enough for some serious white-knuckle acceleration.
Chevy has also put the Camaro on a diet and is now 200 lbs lighter than its predecessor.
The 2017 Camaro ZL1 is expected to reach showrooms by the end of the year. Official pricing for the car has yet to be announced.
"The Camaro ZL1 is designed to excel at everything,"General Motors' head of product development Mark Reuss said in a statement. "It’s a 2+2 coupe offering incredible performance with the highest levels of technology."
The V8 engine, a motor built specifically for the Camaro ZL1, can be paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a new 10-speed automatic. Chevrolet also improved aerodynamics and made design changes compared to lower models. A lower grille opening creates more airflow, and the hood has a carbon fiber insert and a heat extractor that pulls hot air from the engine compartment, Chevrolet said.

With the coupe model already generating plenty of buzz, the American automaker dropped the top on the convertible variant at the same show. According to Chevrolet, the convertible offers comparable performance to the coupe model, thanks to the Camaro s modular and rigid body architecture, which was designed at the outset to support a high-performance convertible. That means the droptop version only has a few minor structural differences so that the coupe s track-honed chassis and driver control systems carry over untouched.

on March 15, 2016 Contributors: Chevrolet The All-New 2017 Camaro ZL1 boasts 640 hp, 10-Speed Auto, and Unique Bodywork
The 2017 ZL1 marks the first application of GM’s new 10-speed automatic. Of course the awesome TR6060 six-speed manual is still available, and its rev-matching capability lets drivers smoothly downshift without any heel-toe heroics, but it has been GM’s latest torque-converter-based automatics that have lead to quicker acceleration and often faster lap times than their three-pedal cars. Compared to the 8L90 found in the Camaro SS, the 10-speed offers an even wider overall range of ratios, at 7.39 compared to 7.02, but the extra gears make for smaller steps between gears. It allows the LT4 to keep its rpm up where its making boost and its power is optimal. Chevrolet says this is especially helpful on the track when exiting corners. GM will have the new 10-speed in eight models by the end of 2018 and says it’s even quicker-shifting that the 8L90.
Chevrolet invited us to an event at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, to show off the 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1. Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development for GM took the stage as the cover came off the bright red 2017 ZL1. What was immediately apparent was the aggressive new front bodywork, unique to the ZL1 from the A-pillar forward.
To enhance its on track capabilities, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 uses nearly all of the Corvette Z06 s best handling components like the magnetorheological dampers, electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and GM s Performance Traction Management System.
Visually, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the most aggressive looking model in the sixth-gen family. The front splitter, rocker-panel extensions, and rear wing are all designed to improve the car s aerodynamics and high-speed stability.
The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is powered by General Motor s 6.2L LT4 supercharged V8, which generates an eye-popping 640 horsepower and 640 lb.ft. torque (yes, this is the same engine found in the mighty Corvette Z06 where it produces 10 more horsepower and lb.ft. torque).
When the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 goes on sale later this year, expect it to carry a starting price upwards of $60,000. That s worth the price of admission in our book.
. As of this writing, Chevrolet has not unveiled the specifics of the rear brake components on the ZL1. To withstand the excessive heat at the racetrack, the Camaro ZL1 is fitted with 11 heat exchangers for proper powertrain cooling.
The monster Camaro is fitted with a set of 20 inch alloy wheels which are wrapped with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires measuring 285/30 up front and 305/30 at the rear.
Chevrolet claims that when compared to the old ZL1, the new model is 200 pounds lighter, meaning a better power-to-weight ratio and more dynamic driving experience, both on and off the racetrack. When compared to the previous generation (580 horsepower 6.2L LSA V8), the new motor produces an additional 60 horsepower and 84 lb.ft. torque.
To further maximize engine cooling, the hollowed-out Chevy flowtie badge is now carried over to the ZL1 after first appearing on the previous generation Camaro Z/28. A new hood with a power bulge incorporates a heat extractor and the reworked lower grille maximizes airflow into the engine.
